"It first began in 1241, when Shoichi Kokushi rode on the segakidana (rack for carrying the dead) and sprinkled sacred water to ward off the epidemic. It tied together with Gion beliefs and became a Yamakasa Shinto ritual for preventing disasters. Setting 1241 as its beginning, 2016 marks the 775th celebration of this festival.
